The exhibition "Performances, Projections, Debates, and Redactions – Case Studies of International Art Meetings in Portugal, 1974-1977" presents a set of cases of performance art in Portugal, based on different visual and media materials, which reflect a field of artistic experimentation and political and cultural manifestation, constitutive of the conquest of democracy in Portugal. Fifty years on from the transfer of focus from the artistic object to the body, from formal configuration to gesture, from the contemplative perspective of the observer to an intrusive relationship with the public, and from the construction of aesthetic values representative of the history of art to their deconstruction through the valorisation of live action, it is not possible to put street art back into the cultural institution. Reducing performance art practices to the cataloguing of new mediums, or to the mere cataloguing of the events themselves, is to erase from them the social and political transformations of which they were a reflection and whose discourses triggered new forms of cultural and political production. The cases presented here question artistic media and practices, as well as the revolutions that emanate from them.
